The Neighborhood Consortium

Organized by residents, open to all who love this neighborhood — honoring our past, living our present, and working together to build our future.

Our Purpose

The Sugar Hill Neighborhood Consortium is a community-based organization, founded by residents and their allies to strengthen, preserve, and uplift an historic Aiken, South Carolina neighborhood rooted in a rich African American legacy of education, faith, and civic strength.

For generations, the people of Sugar Hill have built institutions, raised families, and sustained a culture of resilience and mutual support. The Consortium exists to carry that work forward — advocating for our neighborhood's needs, attracting investment, coordinating services, and ensuring that longtime residents, new neighbors, and partners of every background have a seat at the table as we shape what Sugar Hill becomes next.

Every neighborhood deserves leadership, voice, and resources. The Consortium is the place where that comes together — with respect for the past, care for the present, and ambition for the future.

Our People

The Sugar Hill Neighborhood Consortium is led by residents — longtime and newer — who care deeply about this place. We're a young organization still finding our shape, and the people at the table today are the ones willing to show up, listen, and do the work.

How the Consortium Works

The Sugar Hill Neighborhood Consortium operates through regular community meetings and partnerships with local organizations. We welcome all residents of Sugar Hill and surrounding areas to participate. Membership is free, and every voice matters.

Community Meetings

We hold quarterly community meetings open to all residents. These meetings are the place to hear updates, discuss neighborhood priorities, and make decisions together. Additional meetings may be called as needed.

Working Groups, As They Form

As the Consortium grows, our work will organize around focus areas like history and heritage, youth and education, infrastructure and safety, senior resources, events, and finance. These working groups form as residents step up to lead them. If one of these areas matters to you, that's an invitation to help start it.

Partnerships

The Consortium aims to work with the City of Aiken, Aiken County, local churches, schools, nonprofits, and businesses to bring resources and support to Sugar Hill. We believe in collaboration — building relationships that benefit the neighborhood while respecting its history and identity.
